[edit] Judges
After the season began, Paula Abdul did not return as the fourth judge on the panel.[6] In response to contract negotiations being unresolved, in August 2009, Victoria Beckham, Mary J. Blige, Shania Twain, Katy Perry, Avril Lavigne, Joe Jonas, Neil Patrick Harris and Kristin Chenoweth were brought in to star as guest judges during the auditions phase.[7][8][9][10] After making the decision to utilize guest judges in Abdul's absence, Fox chairman Peter Rice stated that they would find a permanent fourth judge before the season premiere in January,[11] leading the confirmation on September 9, 2009 by Ellen DeGeneres, that she would be joining the show as the new permanent fourth judge for the rounds held at CBS Television City for Hollywood Week and thereafter, onto the live shows.[12]
In addition, Simon Cowell announced in January 2010 shortly before the ninth season premiere, that he would also be leaving American Idol after this season. No replacements have been confirmed for the judge.
[edit] International broadcasts
The United Kingdom is broadcasting the season starting from the 13th and 14th January 2010 on ITV2 (ITV was the network that broadcast the original Idols franchise in 2001), on a same-day delay basis after the American broadcast. [edit] "Pants on the Ground"
During the Atlanta auditions, 62-year-old activist 'General' Larry Platt appeared and performed his own original song, "Pants on the Ground." Platt was ineligible to continue, due to the show's age limit of 28 years old. However, his performance became a viral hit, and several celebrities performed the song in the days that followed Wednesday's airing of American Idol, including Jimmy Fallon, impersonating Neil Young on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and Brett Favre, singing it in the locker room after beating the Dallas Cowboys in the playoffs, as well as the newscasters of the Today Show (Meredith Viera, Matt Lauer, Al Roker and Ann Curry).[18][19] Platt himself also made an appearance on ABC Television's The View on January 18, 2010, performing the song in its entirety.[20]
Platt was actually not an Army General, but rather a civil rights activist in Atlanta. The nickname "General" was given to him by Hosea Williams because of his heroic efforts on behalf of the civil rights movement.[21] In fact, the Georgia General Assembly designated September 4, 2001, as, "Larry Platt Day", for his, "priceless and immeasurable contributions to society", as well as, "his great energy and commitment to equality and the protection of the innocent and for his outstanding service to the Atlanta community and the citizens of Georgia."[22] During his audition, Platt wore a pin in support of Troy Anthony Davis.[23]
